In this video I teach belly breathing and thoracoabdominal breathing. Thoracoabdominal breathing is what is recommended by my teachers. Practicing in the tradition of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. People who practice this type of breathing are quite confident that it is far superior to belly breathing. But I didn’t want to be dogmatic. I think that whatever gets people practicing conscious breathing is great.
My teachers are also yoga therapists. I did not take their yoga therapy course, I am sure that it is a wonderful course, but I couldn’t afford to take it. In the book published by one of my teachers “Classical Yoga Asana,” by Ante Pavlovic, belly breathing is mentioned as being a good therapy for people who are not ready for thoracoabdominal breathing. Key here is that shallow breathing is causing so many problems, learning how to breathe more deeply and calmly will help many health issues. Try it out, 10 minutes a day and find out for yourself.
